The book of Revelation names the tribes of Israel in two important visions. Revelation 7 describes servants of God sealed before coming judgments, and Revelation 21 pictures the names of the twelve tribes on the gates of New Jerusalem. Together these passages emphasize Yahweh’s faithfulness, protection, witness, and completed redemption.


The Sealing in Revelation 7


John hears the number of those sealed: 144,000 from the tribes of Israel (Revelation 7:4–8, KJV). The list deserves careful reading because its order and names differ from several Old Testament lists. Rather than forcing the passage into speculation, believers should begin with its clear message: Yahweh knows His servants and marks them as belonging to Him.


A Great Multitude From Every Nation


Immediately afterward, John sees “a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues” standing before the throne (Revelation 7:9). Scripture presents both the named tribal company and the international multitude within the same worship-filled vision.


The Gates of New Jerusalem


Revelation 21:12 says that the holy city has twelve gates bearing the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. The apostles’ names appear on the twelve foundations. This imagery joins the biblical story across the covenants and celebrates the one redemptive purpose of Yahweh.


Living Faithfully While We Wait
