Living Set Apart: The Call to Holiness

Introduction: You Were Not Called to Blend In

We live in a culture that aggressively pressures everyone to conform — to agree with its values, adopt its lifestyles, and abandon the ancient paths of God’s Word in the name of relevance, tolerance, and progress. And nowhere is this pressure felt more acutely than in the lives of believers who have heard the call to live holy and set apart for God. The world pulls in one direction. God’s Word pulls in another.

But the call to holiness is not a call to religious perfectionism or joyless rule-keeping. It is a call to identity — to knowing who you are as a covenant child of the Most High God and living from that identity outward. God’s people have always been a ‘peculiar people’ in the most beautiful sense of that word: unique, set apart, distinctly belonging to Him. This is not a burden. It is your glory.

Biblical Foundation: What the Scriptures Say

1 Peter 2:9 — “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.”

Four identities are given here: chosen (not random or accidental), royal priesthood (access to God and the authority to represent Him), holy nation (set apart as a people belonging to God), peculiar people (a treasured possession). You were called out of darkness — the world’s system, values, and spiritual blindness — and into His marvellous light. Your holiness is the testimony of that transition.

The standard and the source of holiness are the same: God Himself. You are called to be holy not because of a list of rules but because of who God is. His holiness flows from His character, and as His children, bearing His image, we are called to reflect that character in every area of life — ‘in all manner of conversation’ means every dimension of your daily existence.

Romans 12:2 — “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

The path to holiness runs through the mind. Transformation comes through the renewal of your thinking by God’s Word. As your mind is saturated with Scripture and aligned with God’s truth, your desires, your choices, and your lifestyle will naturally begin to reflect the holy character of God. Holiness is not achieved by willpower — it is the fruit of a renewed mind.

2 Corinthians 6:17 — “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.”

God’s call to separation is paired with a covenant promise: I will receive you. Holiness is not about isolation from people but about separation from the world’s values, spiritual corruption, and covenant violations. When you answer God’s call to come out and be separate, the reward is His personal, intimate reception of you into deeper relationship.

Hebrews 12:14 — “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.”

This verse makes the stakes of holiness unmistakably clear. Holiness is not optional for the believer who wants to walk in fullness of covenant relationship with God. The writer of Hebrews is not threatening — he is describing a spiritual reality: the closer you walk in holiness, the closer you walk to God. The more you yield your life to His purifying work, the more of Him you will see and experience.

Deep Teaching: Unpacking the Truth

Biblical holiness is not about perfection — it is about direction. It is not the claim that you never sin; it is the consistent orientation of your life toward God and away from sin. It is the daily choice to surrender your will, your appetites, your affections, and your ambitions to the God who is holy and who calls you to reflect His character in the world.

The dietary laws of Leviticus 11, the Sabbath commandment of Exodus 20, the sexual ethics of Scripture, the prohibition against idolatry and occult involvement — these are all expressions of God’s call to holiness. They are not arbitrary restrictions. They are covenant markers that distinguish God’s people from the surrounding culture and protect them from spiritual, physical, and relational harm. Every ‘do not’ in Scripture is God saying: ‘I love you too much to let you walk into that.’

One of the most powerful testimonies in the modern world is a believer who genuinely lives differently. When the world sees a life of sexual purity, financial integrity, covenant faithfulness, Sabbath rest, and genuine love for God and neighbor — it is confronted with a witness that no amount of preaching alone can produce. Your set-apart life is itself a form of Kingdom proclamation.

Real-Life Application: Walking It Out

Do an honest audit of your life’s conformity to the world: Ask God to show you areas where you have been conformed to the world rather than transformed by His Word. This might include entertainment choices, relationships, business practices, or spiritual compromises. Bring whatever He shows you to repentance.

Build a daily habit of Scripture saturation: Romans 12:2 says transformation comes through the renewing of your mind. The most powerful tool for renewing your mind is regular, consistent, meditative engagement with the KJV Bible. Let God’s Word define what is good, acceptable, and perfect — not culture, not feelings, not tradition.

Honor God’s dietary and covenant laws as expressions of holiness: Leviticus 11 and related passages outline God’s instructions for holy living that include what you eat. While this is a deeper area of covenant study, consider allowing the Holy Spirit to lead you into greater alignment with God’s holiness standards in every area of life.

Surround yourself with a community that pursues holiness: Proverbs 27:17 says iron sharpens iron. Who you spend time with shapes who you become. Seek out a community of believers who take the call to holiness seriously, who hold each other accountable in love, and who encourage one another toward greater conformity to God’s Word.

Common Mistakes Believers Make

Equating holiness with religious legalism: Holiness pursued out of fear, duty, or the desire to earn God’s approval is not biblical holiness — it is religious performance. True holiness flows from love for God and gratitude for what He has done, not from trying to earn what He has already freely given.

Pursuing external holiness without internal transformation: You can dress modestly, observe every dietary law, and keep every outward religious practice while your heart is full of pride, bitterness, and unforgiveness. God is interested in the transformation of the whole person, beginning from the inside.

Defining holiness by cultural religious tradition instead of Scripture: Many things considered ‘holy’ in church culture have no biblical basis, and many things commanded in Scripture are dismissed as outdated. Let the KJV Bible be your standard, not denominational tradition.

Using holiness as a reason to judge others harshly: The call to holiness is a personal call, not a license to condemn others. We are each accountable to God for our own lives. Pursue your own holiness with humility and extend grace to others who are on their own journey.

Encouragement for the Journey

The God who calls you to holiness is also the God who empowers you for it. He does not give you a command without also giving you the grace to fulfill it. Philippians 2:13 assures us: ‘For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.’ You are not alone in this pursuit. He is working in you from the inside out.

Living set apart in a world that wants you to blend in is not easy, but it is glorious. Every choice you make to honor God over culture, to obey His Word over popular opinion, to rest on His Sabbath and keep His commandments — these are acts of worship. They are the language of a heart that belongs wholly to God. And that is the most beautiful way to live.
