Why God's Commandments Still Matter Today

Notice the word 'for ever.' God did not attach an expiration date to His commandments. He gave them so that it would go WELL with you and your children after you. Matthew 5:17 — "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil."

These are the words of the Messiah Himself. He explicitly said 'think not' — He anticipated that people would misunderstand His purpose. He came to fulfill the law, meaning to fill it full of its deepest meaning, not to cancel it. The word 'destroy' in the Greek means to demolish or overthrow. The Messiah made it clear that was never His mission.

John 14:15 — "If ye love me, keep my commandments."

Love and obedience are inseparable in the Kingdom of God. This is not a conditional threat but a beautiful connection: if your love for God is real, it will naturally express itself in a desire to walk in His ways. You cannot claim to love God deeply while dismissing the very instructions He gave for holy living. True love produces willing obedience.

Psalm 119:11 — "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee."

The psalmist understood that God's Word — including His commandments — was the guard of the heart. When we hide Scripture in our hearts through memorization, meditation, and daily reading, it becomes a spiritual alarm system that warns us before we step into sin. The commandments do not condemn us — they keep us.

Romans 7:12 — "Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good."

The apostle Paul, often misquoted as an opponent of the law, declared it plainly: the law is holy, the commandment is holy, just, and good. These are not the words of someone who believed the commandments were done away with. Paul understood that God's law reflected God's holy character, and therefore could never be unholy or obsolete.

God's commandments reveal His character. They show us what love looks like in practical terms: honor your parents, do not steal, do not murder, do not commit adultery, remember the Sabbath, have no other gods before Him. These are not arbitrary rules — they are the blueprint for a holy, just, and peaceful society rooted in covenant relationship with the living God.

When a believer walks in God's commandments, they are not earning salvation — salvation is entirely the gift of God's grace. But they ARE expressing a living, active, covenant faith. James 2:17 tells us that faith without works is dead. Walking in the commandments is one of the most powerful expressions of living faith you can demonstrate.

Real-Life Application: Walking It Out

Study Exodus 20: Read the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20:1–17 slowly and prayerfully. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you any commandment you may have been unknowingly neglecting in your daily life.

Repent and recommit: If you discover areas where you have not been walking in God's statutes, bring them honestly to God in prayer. Ask for forgiveness and ask for His grace to walk in greater obedience going forward.

Memorize one commandment per week: Begin hiding God's Word in your heart by memorizing one commandment or statute each week. This ancient practice of Scripture memory will transform your thinking and protect your steps.

Find a community that honors God's Word: Seek fellowship with other believers who take the whole counsel of Scripture seriously, including God's commandments. Iron sharpens iron (Proverbs 27:17), and covenant community will strengthen your walk.

Common Mistakes Believers Make

Believing the commandments ended at the cross: This teaching has no foundation in Scripture. The Messiah Himself said He did not come to destroy the law. What ended was the condemnation for those who trust in Him — not the standard of holy living.

Treating obedience as optional: Some believers treat God's commandments as suggestions rather than instructions from their covenant God. But Deuteronomy 28 makes clear that both blessing and consequence are tied to whether we walk in His statutes.

Separating love from obedience: Modern Christianity often separates the concepts of love and law, as if they are opposites. But in Scripture, they are deeply connected. John 14:15 says love for God expresses itself through keeping His commandments.

Only keeping comfortable commandments: It is easy to observe the commandments that cost us nothing. The true test of covenant faith is whether we will obey even when it is inconvenient — such as honoring the Sabbath, honoring our parents, or refusing to covet.
