Understanding the Ten Commandments

Their Meaning and Relevance Today

The Ten Commandments are the foundational moral law given by God to His people. They were spoken directly by God and written on stone tablets, showing their divine authority and permanence. These commandments are recorded in Exodus 20:1–17 and Deuteronomy 5:6–21. They reveal God's character and provide guidance for living a life that honors Him and respects others.

Jesus affirmed the importance of God’s commandments when He said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). The Ten Commandments are not merely ancient laws for Israel; they are timeless principles that continue to guide believers today.

The Purpose of the Ten Commandments

The commandments serve several important purposes:

1. They reveal God’s character.
God is holy, just, loving, and righteous. The commandments reflect His nature and show us what He values.

2. They show us what sin is.
Without God’s law, people would not clearly understand what is right or wrong. The commandments help us recognize behaviors and attitudes that separate us from God.

3. They guide us in righteous living.
They provide practical instruction for how to love God and treat others with respect, honesty, and compassion.

4. They point us to our need for Christ.
Because no one perfectly keeps God's law, the commandments remind us of our need for forgiveness and salvation through Jesus Christ.

The Two Great Principles of the Law

Jesus summarized the Ten Commandments in two great principles:

“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
This is the first and great commandment.
And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”
(Matthew 22:37–39)

The first four commandments focus on our relationship with God, while the last six govern our relationships with other people.

The Ten Commandments Explained

1. You Shall Have No Other Gods Before Me

God alone is worthy of worship. This commandment calls us to put Him first in our lives above money, possessions, power, or anything else that might take His place.

2. You Shall Not Make Graven Images

We are not to create idols or worship anything made by human hands. God desires sincere worship from the heart rather than devotion to physical objects or images.

3. You Shall Not Take the Name of the Lord in Vain

God’s name is holy and should be treated with reverence. This commandment warns against using God’s name disrespectfully or in a careless manner.

4. Remember the Sabbath Day to Keep It Holy

God established the Sabbath as a day of rest and worship. It is a time set apart to honor God, reflect on His goodness, and restore our spiritual and physical strength.

5. Honor Your Father and Mother

Respecting parents teaches obedience, humility, and gratitude. Strong families are built on honoring and valuing the guidance of those who raised us.

6. You Shall Not Murder

Human life is sacred because it is created by God. This commandment calls us to respect and protect life.

7. You Shall Not Commit Adultery

Marriage is a sacred covenant between husband and wife. Faithfulness preserves trust, strengthens families, and reflects God’s design for relationships.

8. You Shall Not Steal

Taking what does not belong to us violates trust and harms others. God calls His people to live honestly and respect the property of others.

9. You Shall Not Bear False Witness

Truthfulness is essential in all relationships. This commandment warns against lying, gossip, and false accusations.

10. You Shall Not Covet

Coveting means desiring what belongs to someone else with jealousy or selfishness. Instead of envy, God calls us to cultivate gratitude and contentment.

Why the Ten Commandments Still Matter Today

Although society has changed dramatically since these commandments were first given, their moral principles remain relevant. They guide us toward lives of integrity, compassion, and devotion to God.

When individuals follow these principles, families become stronger, communities become safer, and people experience deeper peace and purpose.

Ultimately, the Ten Commandments remind us that God desires a relationship with us and wants us to live in harmony with Him and with one another.
